Dublin Port Tunnel | Dublin Ireland
Difficult ground conditions on the approach to a new tunnel serving the Port of Dublin were overcome by using the lightweight solution Leca® LWA. Around 5,000m³ of Leca® LWA was used to form a new one metre high embankment for the spur road on the approach to Dublin Port Tunnel.
for call off by main contractor Mowlem. Due to the light weight of Leca® LWA, it was possible to use large capacity articulated tippers to deliver 55m³ loads to the site in Dublin. Final placement was carried out using a tracked excavator with compaction completed by three passes of the same plant.
By specifying Leca® LWA, which is 75% lighter than the equivalent volume of traditional crushed fill, the additional weight of the new embankment on the existing ground was minimised. By being able to place the Leca® LWA in one metre compaction layers, the considerable reduction in programme time was an added benefit.
