FACTORS TO CAUSE TILE DEBONDING PROBLEM

  • Tiling by applying traditional mortar in lumps at tile back (as shown in the picture) can create voids underneath the tiles, which leads to tile fragility.  Moreover water ingress through the voids will damage the nearby areas.

  • The efficiency of tile adhesive will be decreased if using with wrong methods such as applying in lumps, as shown in pic #1, or use with traditional trowel.   This will cause tile being dislodged at later stage.

  • Tile adhesive together with notched trowel provide good adhesion by using the trowel to thoroughly apply adhesive onto substrates.  It is recommended to have adhesive buttered at tiles back when tiling large size tiles in order to have the optimum efficiency of the adhesive.

  • Tiles should not be immersed in water when tiling with tile adhesives.  Soaked water will miss the formulated proportion between water and the adhesive.  This can reduces the adhesives adhesion and leads to slip problem for wall tiling.

  • Fixing large size tiles with traditional way by using traditional mortar and doing floor leveling at the same time can cause debonding problem and tile breaking at the corners.

  • It is recommended to use appropriate tile adhesive according to the applications such as using high performance tile adhesive with polymer composition when fixing large size tiles.
